Carey Hagan

Carey Hagan is a highly trained librarian, currently employed by the Fairfax County Public Library. In addition to serving as an integral member of the reference desk staff since January of 2006, Ms. Hagan also plays a leading role in developing quality children’s programs, such as the Fairfax County Library’s Early Literacy Storytime series.

Holding a Master of Science in Library and Information Science since 2004, Carey Hagan has developed high levels of proficiency with a wide variety of online reference networks, including LexisNexis, Westlaw, FirstSearch, and Mediline. She has also amassed extensive experience working with academic databases such as ERIC (the Education Resources Information Center) and government information databases such as Thomas and FedStats. Prior to obtaining her Master of Science from Washington, DC’s Catholic University of America, Ms. Hagan attended the University of Virginia at Charlottesville, where she earned dual Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature and Russian Language and Literature.

Carey Hagan’s accomplishments as a librarian and information science specialist were predated by a seven-year career in middle school and high school education. From 1994 to 2001, she taught English at a variety of academic institutions in New Jersey and northern Virginia. While interning with the Library of Congress in 2004, Ms. Hagan leveraged her years of teaching experience as the designer and instructor of a course on the important Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) service FirstSearch.

When she isn’t working, Carey Hagan is an avid outdoor enthusiast, who can often be found hiking, swimming, and skiing. She also maintains a regular literature blog devoted to the discussion of books for children and young adults. This blog, called Booktalk Three, can be accessed online at booktalkthree.blogspot.com.
